Omeka is a simple, free web publishing system built by and for scholars that is used by hundreds of archives, historical societies, libraries, museums, and individual researchers and teachers to create searchable online databases and scholarly online interpretations of their digital collections. If you have a digital collection of primary sources that you want to publish online in a scholarly way, you’ll want to consider Omeka.

This workshop will focus on getting started with Omeka and will have some basic hands on activities using http://www.omeka.net, a web site for Omeka. Each of you will set up a free account on the site and we will use your site for all the hands on work. We will discuss metadata in Omeka, adding an item, creating collections and working with exhibits. In addition, we will talk about using themes and plugins. While you will be able to gain much from the class watching the demos, you will get the most out of the class through the hands on exercises. Consequently, if you want to use your own materials, you will need to put them on a thumb drive and bring them along. I will also have samples that everyone can use as well.
