Please join us in the Libraries Screening Room on Saturday, October 20, at 4:00 pm as the City Lights Film Series presents, "The Night of the Hunter.”

The Night of the Hunteris a bizarre combination of Southern narrative tradition and German Expressionism. The film, which brings together the acting styles of Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish (who famously starred in Birth of a Nation) with the screenwriting of novelist James Agee and the stylized mise-en-scène of films like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, garnered little praise for director Charles Laughton during its release in 1955. However, cultural interpretation of this thriller changed over time, and today its content and cinematography have influenced filmmakers including Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, and the Coen Brothers, and it has been preserved in the National Film Registry.
(Dir. Charles Laughton, 1955, 92 mins, DVD)
