Killer of Sheep (1978)

Directed by Charles Burnett

Wednesday, September 12, 7:00 p.m.

IU Moving Image Archive Screening Room, Herman B Wells Library

Critically acclaimed, but rarely screened, Killer of Sheepused a nonprofessional cast to tell the story of a laborer whose miserable slaughterhouse job both supports and alienates him from those he loves. A counter to the “blaxpoitation” films of the early 70s, the film focuses on everyday life in a black community. Added to the National Film Registry in 1990, Charles Burnett’s independent film was shelved for decades until a rerelease in 2007, when it was named one of the 100 Essential Films by the U.S.'s National Society of Film Critics. (80 min. Not rated.)

This film will be introduced by Dr. Ivan Kreilkamp (Indiana University Department of English) and member of the Themester 2018 advisory committee. Dr. Kreilkamp’s latest book is Persons, Animals, and the Victorian Novel.

This film is part of “Themester 2018: Animal/Human.” For other events and activities exploring the interrelationship of humans and non-human animals, see Themester’s schedule at https://themester.indiana.edu/news-events/index.html.
