Critically acclaimed, but rarely screened, Killer of Sheepused a nonprofessional cast to tell the story of a laborer whose miserable slaughterhouse job both supports and alienates him from those he loves. A counter to the “blaxpoitation” films of the early 70s, the film focuses on everyday life in a black community. Added to the National Film Registry in 1990, Charles Burnett’s independent film was shelved for decades until a rerelease in 2007, when it was named one of the 100 Essential Films by the U.S.'s National Society of Film Critics.
