Please join us on Wednesday, November 7 @ 12:00pm for a lecture featuring Professor Arzu Öztürkmen: On the Landscape of the Archives in Turkey: From Topkapı Palace Library to the TRT Collections

Boğaziçi University, Department of History

This lecture provides a look at the historical documents archived in Turkey in the form of textual, visual, sound or moving images.  Historians of Ottoman history relied for a long time on the manuscripts in the Libraries of Topkapı Palace and Süleymaniye, along with the Prime Ministry Archives in Istanbul.  Recently, Military Archives and Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) revealed new visual documents and moving images not available before.  Another venue is the sound archives, as oral history research has become an important new methodology to collect “more history.”  The lecture will situate the landscape of these archives within the politics of archiving, as many of them are also subject to political framing of the the past for the present.

Sponsored by IU Libraries Moving Image Archive.

The Screening Room temperature tends to run cool, so please remember to bring a jacket or sweater.

The Screening Room is located on the ground floor of the Herman B Wells Library (048).
