With Moi, Un Noir, Jean Rouch portrays a group of Nigerian men who leave their hometown for the city of Treichville, on the Ivory Coast. The movie uncovers their daily life, as they work a variety of low-paid jobs, struggling to make the little money they eventually spend at night. Jean Rouch, as an omniscient narrator, counteracts the dreadful presence of the colonizer by challenging the typical cinematic format, allowing his characters to narrate their stories in their own words. (Dir. Jean Rouch, 1958, 70 min.)
